Celebrating the Gift of Time: Honoring Habitat Volunteers at Annual Christmas Party

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg volunteers gathered at tables during the annual Christmas party

The holiday season is a time for gratitude, reflection, and coming together—and this year, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg did just that at our annual volunteer Christmas party. The afternoon was dedicated to celebrating the people who make our mission possible: the volunteers who generously give their time to help build homes, strengthen communities and create opportunities for local families.

Volunteers from across Habitat’s work gathered, including those who serve at our three ReStore locations, on construction sites, at our program office and even future Habitat homebuyers performing sweat equity hours. During the celebration, several individuals were honored with awards recognizing their outstanding commitment and service.

“I’m thankful to all of the volunteers at all our three locations, at our construction sites, at our program office, and home partners who also volunteer at our ReStores,” said Yorktown ReStore Manager Gary McFadden. “It is more than just a mission of home building—it’s a mission of heart. Anyone can give their money, but to give their time is even more valuable and much more impactful. It takes a much larger commitment.”

That commitment is evident in the stories and motivations of Habitat volunteers, many of whom return week after week because they believe deeply in the mission.

“I volunteer because I think their mission is so important,” said Jenny McCauley, who gives back at the ReStores. “Everybody needs housing. This is a way I can give back.”

Nancy Cowhey, who volunteers at the ReStore eStore, finds meaning in knowing her time contributes directly to helping families achieve homeownership.

“The best part about it is knowing that people have a home,” Nancy said. “Just the little bit of time I can give, I know that I’m contributing to that.”

Whether sorting donations, assisting customers, swinging a hammer or supporting Habitat programs behind the scenes, volunteers are the heart of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. Their willingness to give their time—especially in a busy world—creates lasting impact for families and communities across the Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg.

As we celebrated the season and recognized outstanding volunteers, one thing was clear: the true gift of the holidays is the time, care and commitment our volunteers give all year long.

We help as many families as we can, but the lack of decent and affordable housing remains a critical problem in our area. By donating, you will provide upfront funding for building materials and services that makes interest-free loans to Habitat partner families possible. Habitat partner families help to build their own homes - alongside volunteers - and pay an affordable mortgage. Your monetary donations enable us to continue building strength, stability and independence for future local families.
