Applications Now Open for Rock the Block Home Repair Grant Program for Residents in Hampton’s Fordham Neighborhood

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will give a facelift to selected qualifying homes in the Fordham section of Hampton through its Rock the Block co-payment grant program.

The home improvement matching grant program named Rock the Block is a partnership between the local Habitat affiliate and the Hampton Redevelopment & Housing Authority, made possible through funding from the City of Hampton, who selects the neighborhood. The program assists homeowners, renters and landlords with making exterior improvements to the outside of their homes at minimal costs. Repairs may include improvements to roofs, porches, sidewalks, driveways, garages, stairs, fascia, gutters and downspouts, lights, windows and doors, siding, and front yards.

All Rock the Block projects must be visible from the street or curb.

Rock the Block will grant up to $20,000 per house as part of the program that is a “hand up,” not a handout. Applicants who are approved through the grant program will pay a small portion toward the work that will range from $50 to no more than $2,000. Investors and renters will pay no more than $10,000 total. Funds are available to all single-family and duplex residential property owners and renters regardless of income. Renters must have written permission from their landlord submitted with the application.

Residents who live in the Fordham section of Hampton can apply for the program by filling out an application package that is available at the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg and online at HabitatPGW.org/RockTheBlock.

Applications will be accepted now through April 15, 2023. For more information on the Rock the Block program, please contact Maerine Mitchell using rock@habitatpgw.org or 757-913-5652.

We help as many families as we can, but the lack of decent and affordable housing remains a critical problem in our area. By donating, you will provide upfront funding for building materials and services that makes interest-free loans to Habitat partner families possible. Habitat partner families help to build their own homes - alongside volunteers - and pay an affordable mortgage. Your monetary donations enable us to continue building strength, stability and independence for future local families.
