Habitat for Humanity to Host Community Open House “Behind the Build” Event at Innovative Home Construction Site in Charles City County
Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg invites media, community members, local leaders, stakeholders and volunteers to celebrate the progress on the first four Habitat homes built by the affiliate in Charles City County.
The nonprofit will host a “Behind the Build” open house event on Wednesday, April 26 between 10 a.m. and noon. The homes under construction are located at 8400 Wilcox Neck Road in Charles City, just a half mile from the Blue Heron Restaurant.
Habitat broke ground on the four homes in November 2022. Four families, including a widowed father of four, took part in the groundbreaking and are the homebuyers, having qualified to purchase the homes through Habitat’s first-time Homebuyer Program. Homebuyers agree to pay back no-interest mortgages over 20 to 30 years — funds recycled back into the community so more Habitat homes can be built.
“We look forward to the community meeting the partners who made these home builds possible and showing off our latest work to construct houses innovatively and affordably,” said Janet V. Green, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg.
The partner that helped bring this project to life is The Virginia Ready Mixed Concrete Association, as part of its Build Virginia Strong campaign. These homes are being constructed using insulating concrete forms (ICFs). ICFs are molds used to hold freshly poured concrete in place during construction. Those molds remain in place permanently to provide additional insulation for the concrete walls. The cost-efficient material that provides additional insulation is more affordable than traditional building materials, energy efficient and disaster resistant.
Other partners for this project include Consociate Media, Crater Planning District Commission, Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development, Kaz Vision & Laser Center, Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, Partnership for Housing Affordability, Plan RVA and Virginia Housing.
Construction on the four homes is expected to be complete this fall.

The event is open house-style and guests are encouraged to come and go as they please during the time period. Because this is an active construction site, guests are asked to wear closed-toe shoes.
