Proceeds from Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg Fundraiser Enough to Build a Habitat Home and More

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg didn’t just Raise the Roof at its annual February fundraiser.

The nonprofit raised enough money to build a Habitat house and provide additional supplies for another at the Raise the Roof event held at the James River Country Club in Newport News on Feb. 19, 2022.

More than 250 guests attended the ticketed evening that featured a live and silent auction, tasty appetizers and signature drinks. Auction items included vacation packages, local art, handmade jewelry and gift certificates for local restaurants and attractions.

All of the proceeds from the night go toward building a Habitat “Raise the Roof House” in the local community that will be sold to a qualifying family through the first-time Habitat Homebuyer Program.

The family will pay a zero-interest equivalent mortgage, and those payments will be cycled back into the local community to help build additional Habitat houses.

It costs approximately $125,000 to build a Habitat home.

“Having so many people attend Raise the Roof is testament that people were eager to get out and support a great cause,” said Virginia Staley, Director of Events and Development at Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “It was such a delight seeing everyone come together.”

Last year Habitat did not hold its Raise the Roof fundraiser in-person due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was still able to generate enough funds through sponsorships and other community giving to build a Habitat house.

Multiple sponsors supported the fundraiser, including Headline Sponsor Ferguson Cares, Presenting Sponsor Old Point National Bank and Diamond Sponsor Abbitt Realty.

A location for the Raise the Roof House has not been determined, but it will be in the Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg service area that extends from the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to New Kent.
