Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg Celebrates 40 Years of Building Homes and Hope

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg proudly marks its 40th anniversary this year, celebrating four decades of building strength, stability and self-reliance through homeownership. Since its founding in 1985, the nonprofit has built 233 forever homes, providing local families with affordable housing and transforming communities in the process.
To honor this milestone, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg is celebrating all things 40 throughout 2025 with a series of initiatives aimed at amplifying its impact:
- Publishing 40 stories highlighting the people, families and organizations whose lives have been changed through Habitat’s work.
- Raising an additional $40,000 to continue building affordable homes.
- Launching a volunteer drive to encourage more community members to get involved.
- Hosting special events and initiatives to commemorate 40 years of service, including events at its three ReStores in Newport News, Williamsburg and Yorktown.
“Our mission has remained steadfast over the past 40 years—to ensure that everyone has a decent and affordable place to live,” said Shauntrice Williams, CEO for Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “This year, we want to celebrate the incredible people who make this work possible and rally even more community support to keep building for the future.”
Founded by an ecumenical group of individuals dedicated to addressing the region’s housing needs, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg has grown into a leading force for affordable homeownership. The organization builds homes in partnership with families who purchase them through a zero-interest mortgage with terms ranging from 20 to 30 years. These homes offer families the foundation they need to thrive, grow and create a better future for themselves and their children.
Habitat for Humanity relies on the generosity of supporters, including individuals, civic groups, churches and businesses, to fund its homebuilding efforts. In addition to constructing new homes, the organization operates Habitat ReStores, which help fund its mission through the sale of donated home goods and building materials.
Through the dedication of thousands of volunteers and the commitment of its partner families, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg continues to build homes, hope and brighter futures. The organization looks forward to expanding its impact for the next 40 years and beyond.
