Apply to Become a Habitat Homeowner By April 29

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will accept applications from community members seeking to become Habitat homeowners beginning April 1. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022, to be considered.

The local nonprofit builds affordable homes in partnership with local families. Homes are purchased with a zero-interest equivalent, 20- to 30-year mortgage with payments that are no more than 30% of the homeowner’s income. Payments include real estate taxes and homeowner insurance. Selected families must agree to give at least 300 hours of sweat equity toward building their home and other families’ homes. All homes are scheduled for construction in 2023.

Families are selected based on need, income, credit history, agreement to complete sweat equity hours and residency. Applicants must live or work for at least one year in Charles City County, Hampton, James City County, New Kent County, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg or York. Applicants must be a first-time home buyer, meaning the applicant cannot have owned a home within the past three years.

Applications, and further details about the process and the homebuyer program, are available online at our Homebuyer Program page. Hard copies of the application can be picked up at both of the Habitat ReStore locations in Newport News and Williamsburg. The Newport News ReStore is at 371 Chatham Drive; the Williamsburg ReStore is at 1303 Jamestown Road.

Applications are also available at the Housing Authorities for the respective municipalities served by Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg and local libraries in its service area. Community members can also stop by Habitat’s administrative offices at 11011 Warwick Blvd., in Newport News to pick up an application.

Completed applications with supporting documentation and the application fee of $15 for single applicants or $30 for co-applicants can be delivered in person at the Habitat administrative offices or mailed to Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, P.O. Box 1443, Newport News, Virginia, 23601. No applications will be accepted after the April 29 deadline.
