Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg Named Affiliate of the Year for Efforts in Sustainability
Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg was named Habitat for Humanity Affiliate of the Year by Viridiant, the Commonwealth’s most experienced, full-service green building verification and consulting firm.
The nonprofit earned the accolade at the Building Sustainability Conference and Awards in a ceremony held at The Omni Hotel in Richmond that honored the region’s premier developers, builders, architects, government officials and other industry professionals for work completed in 2022. The award lauds the Habitat affiliate that acts as a leader in its region for delivering affordable, energy-efficient homes to its partner families. Points were given for overall energy efficiency, integrated design, efforts to reduce and conserve resources, resiliency, innovation and community impact.
“We’re grateful to receive this award that celebrates our tireless efforts to find affordable solutions in housing that also reflect our commitment to sustainability,” said Janet V. Green, CEO of the local Habitat affiliate. “Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize environmentally friendly building practices and building energy-efficient homes to reduce utility bills for homeowners.”
Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg has built and sold more than 215 affordable homes since 1985, providing permanent, affordable, safe shelter to more than 1,000 adults and children in its service area. In 2022, eight families purchased and moved into homes built by the affiliate.
Two homes using innovative 3D printing technology are nearing completion in Newport News; the nonprofit dedicated the first-ever completed 3D printed Habitat house in the nation in 2021. Last year, Habitat began construction on four homes in Charles City using Insulating Concrete Forms, which lead to significant savings in energy for the homeowner. Those homes will be dedicated to families in time for the holidays.
Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg is one of 39 affiliates of the international nonprofit in the Commonwealth. Viridiant was formerly known as EarthCraft Virginia.
