For over four decades, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg has built more than houses. It’s built stability, opportunity and hope for families across the region. That legacy of impact will be honored on World Habitat Day – Monday, Oct. 6 – when Delegate Marcia “Cia” Price presents a commending resolution from the Virginia General Assembly to the local affiliate of the international nonprofit inside its Newport News ReStore location.

The community is invited to attend. A short program will begin at 10 a.m.

The resolution, adopted by the General Assembly earlier this year, commends Habitat for “40 years of promoting access to affordable housing and building stronger communities throughout the Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg.”

Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg has built and renovated hundreds of homes, partnering with families, volunteers and donors to make affordable housing possible. Families purchase homes through an affordable mortgage and contribute sweat equity hours by helping to build their own homes and the homes of others—creating stability, pride and community.

“This resolution is a powerful recognition of what has been achieved over the past 40 years—but also a reminder of the work ahead,” said Shauntrice Williams, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “Every family deserves a decent place to live. As we celebrate this milestone, we also recommit ourselves to building a future where possibilities begin with a home.”

Price, who represents Virginia’s 95th House District, will present the resolution in honor of the organization’s milestone and enduring impact.

The event kicks off Habitat ReStore’s 8th anniversary sale at Chatham Drive, building on the legacy of the first Newport News ReStore location, which opened on Warwick Boulevard in 2003. The anniversary sale invites the public to shop, save and support Habitat’s mission. Habitat ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently-used items to generate enough profits to build more Habitat homes.

DONATE NOW

We help as many families as we can, but the lack of decent and affordable housing remains a critical problem in our area. By donating, you will provide upfront funding for building materials and services that makes interest-free loans to Habitat partner families possible. Habitat partner families help to build their own homes - alongside volunteers - and pay an affordable mortgage. Your monetary donations enable us to continue building strength, stability and independence for future local families.
