Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg CEO Janet V. Green Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award from Hampton Roads Housing Consortium
Janet V. Green, the longstanding CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, received the esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hampton Roads Housing Consortium (HRHC). The award was presented at the 18th Annual HRHC Housing Awards ceremony luncheon in Hampton, Virginia on Nov. 7, recognizing Green’s decades of transformative contributions to affordable housing in the region.
The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest accolade granted by the HRHC. It recognizes an individual who demonstrated lifetime successes committed to improving families’ lives and our communities’ well-being. Recipients of the award will have strived to positively impact households across all income levels that deserve fair opportunities to buy or rent safe, decent, affordable and suitable housing for their needs. The awardee also demonstrates exemplary, state-of-the-art responses to providing affordable housing or support services.
Green’s leadership has been instrumental in guiding Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg’s mission to provide affordable housing to low-income families. Under her guidance, the organization has expanded its impact, building dozens of homes annually and fostering community resilience through sustainable housing initiatives.
“This award is not just a recognition of my journey but a testament to the dedication of Habitat’s team, volunteers, donors and community partners who believe in a shared vision of housing stability for all,” said Green, who is retiring from the organization at the end of the year. “Affordable housing is fundamental to building healthy communities, and I’m deeply honored to be part of this work.”
With more than 20 years at the helm of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, Green has pioneered several innovative programs, including neighborhood revitalizations, partnerships with local governments, and new homeownership opportunities tailored to the unique needs of Hampton Roads. Her legacy is one of compassion, vision and unwavering dedication to making homeownership accessible to families in need.
The HRHC’s Annual Housing Awards highlight achievements across various sectors, celebrating those who have made significant strides in promoting affordable housing solutions throughout Hampton Roads. Green’s award reinforces the importance of community leadership and the profound impact that dedicated advocates like her have on the lives of countless families.
In addition to Green’s award, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg itself was honored at the Nov. 7 ceremony with the “Housing Partner: Special Project Award” for demonstrating outstanding commitment, effectiveness and innovation in meeting housing-related needs through its Rock the Block program in partnership with Hampton Redevelopment & Housing Authority and the City of Hampton.
The program assists homeowners, renters and landlords with their residences in targeted Hampton neighborhoods to make exterior improvements to the outside of their homes. Rock the Block is a hand up, not a hand-out. All program beneficiaries pay 10-50% of the cost towards the work. Through Rock the Block, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg has improved living conditions, increased neighborhood pride and strengthened community bonds, creating a ripple effect that positively influences entire neighborhoods.
