More Than a House: How Habitat Helped Cynthia Hall Build a Life

When Cynthia Hall bought her first home in 1989, she was just 23-years-old and stepping into uncharted territory. She was the first person in her family to become a homeowner, a milestone that carried both promise and pressure.

At the time, Cynthia was a young mother raising her 5-year-old son in a rental house plagued by mechanical problems. The bills were constant. Stability felt out of reach.

“I was living paycheck to paycheck,” she said. “When I heard about Habitat for Humanity, I thought it might be the chance to give my son a better life.”

That hope carried her to the day of her Habitat home interview, a moment she still remembers in vivid detail. Nervous but determined, Cynthia and her son dressed up for the occasion.

“I told him, ‘Sit still, pay attention and be quiet,’” she said, remembering how she straightened his little bow tie. “He was so rambunctious, but I wanted everything to be perfect. That moment is etched in my memory forever.”

Out of 150 applicants, Cynthia was chosen.

The news left her stunned and overwhelmed with joy. The very first call she made was to her mother.

“She was elated,” Cynthia said. “And for me, it was life-changing. I was the first person in my family to own their home. It gave me a sense of pride I had never felt before.”

That pride became the foundation for everything that followed.

Through the Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg Homebuyer Program, first time homeowners are selected through a stringent application process and, if approved, purchase a home with a zero-interest equivalent, 20 to 30-year mortgage.

Cynthia didn’t just succeed. She soared. She paid off her Habitat home early, excelled professionally and eventually went on to buy and sell 11 more homes.

Each step reinforced the confidence she had discovered through homeownership. Each milestone traced back to that first “yes.”

Today, Cynthia channels that confidence into service.

With a family deeply rooted in military service—her brother, nephews and grandfather all served, and her daughter is an Air Force veteran who now works in cybersecurity for the federal government—Cynthia has seen firsthand the many ways her family has built lives of service and achievement. Her son is excelling professionally with American Airlines and is also a state-licensed barber and stylist.

Those accomplishments, along with her family’s dedication to serving others, have inspired Cynthia to use her properties to provide housing for veterans in need.

“Helping those who have served us became my passion,” she said. “They protected us, and now I can give them a safe place to rest.”

Looking back, Cynthia sees her Habitat home as the turning point—the moment her life shifted direction.

“Becoming a homeowner gave me strength I had never known before. It changed everything,” she said.

Her message to future Habitat families is both simple and powerful: “Being chosen out of so many applicants is a sign. It means you have more in you and now is the time to go after it. Take that pride and let it carry you forward.”

For Cynthia, who now also serves on Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg’s Board of Directors and Habitat’s Family Selection Committee, owning a Habitat home at 23 was more than a milestone.

It was the beginning of a life built on confidence, purpose and the belief that success is meant to be shared.
