SUMMARY:Donation Drive: Newport News ReStore
DESCRIPTION:Fall cleaning really is a thing and it just so happens there’s never been a better time to donate to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Newport News. \nThe store operated by Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg is holding donation drives on three upcoming Saturdays: Sept. 24\, Oct. 1 and Oct 8 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. A truck will be parked in front of the store at 371 Chatham Drive to make dropping off your gently used items convenient. If you can’t make it on one of these Saturdays\, the ReStore accepts donations Monday-Saturday at the loading dock behind the store. \nRemember\, you can also schedule a FREE donation pickup here or by calling 757-932-8976\, Option 1. \nBonus: You get a 10% off coupon to shop at the ReStore\, where prices of new and gently used furniture\, appliances\, home accessories\, building materials and more are usually 30-90% off retail. \nDouble bonus: By donating\, you’re making a difference in the lack of local affordable housing\, a crisis that continues to worsen. The local Habitat affiliate received over 250 applications this year from families seeking to qualify for its first-time Homebuyer Program. That’s nearly double the amount from last year. \n“The demand exceeds the supply\,” said Janet V. Green\, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “Everyone deserves a decent\, safe place to live.” \nHabitat homes are sold to qualifying families who pay back a no-interest mortgage so that more homes can be built in the local community. \nThe local Habitat can build more homes with increased funding\, and the ReStores in Newport News and Williamsburg play a significant role in that. All proceeds from the ReStores go toward construction of local Habitat houses\, which cost $125\,000 to build. The inventory for the ReStore is almost all from donations. \n“By decluttering your home this fall and making room for the holidays\, you are supporting Habitat’s mission to build homes\, communities and hope\,” Green said. \nSee the full list of what to donate here.

SUMMARY:Braddy Family Groundbreaking
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us VIRTUALLY for the groundbreaking of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg’s home construction project for the Braddy family. \nTune in here on Facebook Tuesday\, September 27\, 2022 at 10 a.m. for a live stream from the event. \nThe home will be located in Newport News and is being built in partnership with the Braddy family and thanks to the sponsorship of the Annie Belle Reavis Tuccori Foundation. \nThe Annie Belle Reavis Tuccori Foundation honors the memory of a beloved Hampton Roads native\, and supporting the causes that mattered to her most. \nAnnie Belle Reavis Tuccori was born in Norfolk and named after her grandmother. She lived most of her life in Newport News and Hampton. She was a 1942 graduate of Newport News High School where she enjoyed acting in plays. On the weekends\, she would go with her father to the dances hosted at the country club (now The Woodlands Golf Course). Later in life\, Annie was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company where she worked for 24 years. She was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church where she said the Lord enriched her life with every lesson there. \nShe believed in Newport News. She witnessed all of the highs and lows that have taken place over the last several decades – the victories\, the abundance\, the strife\, the storms\, the growth. She recognized the tremendous potential of her city\, and saw all of the people and organizations working tirelessly to make that potential a reality. Annie lived a life of prudence\, having grown up through the Great Depression and upon her death chose to provide the community she loved with a generous gift to foster the continued change that made this city so special to her. \nThe event will be held rain or shine and last no more than 30 minutes.
