SUMMARY:Live Life in 3D Ribbon Cutting Event
DESCRIPTION:Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg invites the community to tune in LIVE on Facebook to watch the ribbon cutting ceremony of the first-ever completed 3D printed Habitat house in the nation. \nTuesday\, Dec. 21\, 2021\n10:30 a.m. \nThe three-bedroom home with two full baths in Williamsburg has 1\,200 square feet of living space. \nHabitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg partnered with Alquist for the project and together they broke ground on the house in July 2021. \nAlquist used concrete in place of lumber to 3D print the walls\, saving an estimated 15% per square foot in building costs. Concrete better retains temperature\, saving on heating and cooling costs\, and is resistant to tornado and hurricane damage. \nWith costs of labor\, lumber and other construction materials continuing to escalate\, finding affordable housing in James City County and in communities across the nation continues to be a challenge. Using the innovative technology of a 3D printer is one way to combat those expenses. Homebuyer April and her son are expected to enjoy savings as high as 50% on utility bills. \nMoving into her first home culminates three years of perseverance for April\, who applied three times to the Habitat Homebuyer Program before her application was accepted. She put in 300 hours of sweat equity or volunteer hours\, many of them working to build her home and surrounding ones in what will become her new neighborhood. \nApril will purchase the home from Habitat for an affordable mortgage. \n“I’ve been through a lot\, but I’m trying to be strong because I have a son\,” said April\, who works in the laundry department at a nearby hotel. “I want him to understand that if you work hard\, you can always get where you need to be. You just have to be patient and try. And keep trying. They want you to succeed at Habitat. They help you along the way.” \nHabitat for Humanity raised funds for the home with the help of generous sponsors\, a community crowdfunding campaign and its charity golf tournament. \nLearn more about this milestone project here.

SUMMARY:Muscarelle Museum and Williamsburg ReStore Community Art Event
DESCRIPTION:The Muscarelle Museum will bring its Driveway Chalk Art Competition to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore parking lot in Williamsburg on Saturday\, July 17\, and invites community members to enter on the spot for a chance to win a $2\,500 first prize. \nSelect one of 50 images from the museum’s permanent collection to participate in the first-ever Driveway Chalk Art Competition\, and create your piece at home\, at your place of business\, or even in the Habitat ReStore parking lot at 1303 Jamestown Road in Williamsburg. \nSteve Prince\, Director of Engagement & Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Muscarelle Museum\, will be there drawing two pieces\, and he and museum volunteers will be available to offer assistance. A portion of the parking lot will be roped off from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, for festivities that will include a food truck and a DJ. \n“We will set people up with their squares so they can build their images\, and we’ll have chalk on hand\, so they can come out with their family and their friends\, join in on the fun and enter the competition on the spot\,” Prince said. “If people don’t already know how to translate an image and blow it up\, we’ll show them how to do it.” \nCompetition entry requires registration and snapping a photo of your finished masterpiece and uploading it to be eligible for prizes that range from $300 for honorable mention to $2\,500 for first place. Entries must be received by midnight on July 31\, 2021. \nPrince said the Muscarelle Museum\, a culturally rich community resource located on the campus of the College of William and Mary\, and the Habitat ReStore\, a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center that uses proceeds to benefit the Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg mission\, are natural partners. \n“Both the Muscarelle Museum and the Habitat ReStore are service organizations\, so I see this as the perfect marriage\,” Prince said. “We service the community by showcasing art and artistic activities. The Habitat ReStore is all about upcycling – something passed on can be healthy and positive to another person. The Habitat ReStore and the museum are similar in terms of enriching families and enriching homes and the culture of the community.” \nThe competition has received entries from California\, Vermont\, Louisiana and Tennessee in addition to numerous entries from throughout Hampton Roads. Prince continues to participate in various popup events to promote what will become an annual event. He created chalk art works multiple times in Merchants Square and at the recent Gloucester Arts Festival. On July 10\, he chalked a piece in front of the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. \nThe Muscarelle Museum website offers tips and tricks to help artists complete their pieces and photograph them properly. \nEach driveway art submission requires a $20 entry fee that will go toward supporting future art projects in the Williamsburg community. Celebrity juror CCH Pounder\, a friend of Prince’s and an art collector\, will select the winners.

SUMMARY:Live Life in 3D Groundbreaking Event
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us VIRTUALLY for the groundbreaking of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg’s 3D printed house\, the first of its kind for Habitat on the East Coast and only the second in the nation. \nTune in here on Facebook Monday\, July 12 at 9 a.m. for a live stream from the event. \nThe home will be located in Williamsburg and approximately 1\,200-square-feet with three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. \nThe home is being built in partnership with Alquist\, a 3D printed home construction company. Alquist will use concrete to print the exterior walls\, which saves up to 15% per square foot in building costs based on preliminary estimates. \nOnce completed\, the home will be sold to a family of two from Williamsburg that has met the criteria to buy a Habitat for Humanity home\, which requires an income of less than 80% of the area median income. The family will attend the groundbreaking and be available for interviews. \nThe event will be held rain or shine and last no more than one hour. \nThe 3D machine will not be on-site and no printing will occur at this ceremony.

SUMMARY:James Family House Ribbon Cutting and Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will welcome the James family to its new Newport News neighborhood during a home dedication ceremony on Monday\, June 14\, at 10:30 a.m. \nThe ceremony will be held rain or shine and streamed live here at facebook.com/habitatpgw. \nHabitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg partnered with Rotary Clubs from Hampton\, Newport News\, Oyster Point\, the Virginia Peninsula and Warwick at City Center for the home that will be sold to Kameera James and her two young sons. James\, a pipefitter for Newport News Shipbuilding\, will receive the keys to the house at the ceremony. \nGroundbreaking for the home took place on June 18\, 2020. This is believed to be the first time that multiple Rotary Clubs joined forces to build one Habitat for Humanity home project. Together they worked to raise the funds to build the house\, secured in-kind contributions and even put in their own volunteer hours on the construction site. \nEvery family who partners with Habitat for Humanity completes sweat equity hours by building their homes and the homes of others\, as well as volunteering in the Newport News and Williamsburg ReStore. Families purchase their homes through an affordable mortgage that helps Habitat for Humanity build additional homes for qualified families.
