SUMMARY:14th Annual Run The D.O.G. Street 5K
DESCRIPTION:Do something to benefit both you and Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg by registering for the 14th annual Run the D.O.G.\, a 5K that raises funds to bring people together to build homes\, communities and hope. \nRace day is April 15\, 2023. \nProceeds will be used to build a home for a family to buy through Habitat’s Homebuyer Program. Qualifying families with low to moderate incomes who have excellent credit and steady employment purchase a home with a zero-interest mortgage and payments are then recycled to build more Habitat homes. \nBy registering for Run the D.O.G.\, you support Habitat in multiple ways. A portion of your registration fee will go directly to Habitat. You can sign up as an individual and fundraise on your own\, create your own team or join an existing team. \nRunners start on Prince George Street\, pass the Governor’s Palace and the Colonial Capitol building\, and finish the final 800 meters on what Franklin D. Roosevelt referred to as “the most storied avenue in all of America\,” Duke of Gloucester Street. \nWhen you choose to run\, walk or participate virtually\, you support the mission of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. \nFind the best option for you. \n• 5K Run\n• 5K Run and Walk\n• Students-Only 5K Run/Walk\n• 5K Competitive Walk\n• Two Shilling Mile\n• 5K Virtual Run/Walk \nThe 5K Run is a Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event\, a Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix Event and a leg of the Historic Triple Crown. \nThe Two Shilling Mile begins at 7 a.m.; the other in-person events start at 7:30 a.m. \nNo race day registrations will be accepted. \nFor information and to register\, visit runthedog5k.com.

SUMMARY:Donation Drive Yorktown ReStore
DESCRIPTION:The new Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Yorktown is accepting drop-off donations starting April 3\, 2023. \nThe Yorktown ReStore operated by Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will open on Saturday\, May 6\, 2023. The 13\,000 square-foot ReStore is located at 4824 George Washington Memorial Highway\, next door to Langley Federal Credit Union. \n“We can use everything\,” said the store’s manager\, Gary McFadden. “We need your donations now so we can have a full store when we open the doors for the first time.” \nDonations can be currently dropped off at the Yorktown ReStore from Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. \nFollow the signs around the building and our grateful Habitat team will help you unload your tax-deductible donation. After the Grand Opening on May 6\, hours will change to Monday through Saturday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. \nHabitat ReStores sell new and gently used furniture\, appliances\, home accessories\, building materials and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price\, usually 30-90% off. Habitat ReStores do not accept clothing. For the full list of what can and cannot be donated\, visit here. \nThe Habitat ReStore will also pick up residential and business donations free of charge. Schedule your appointment online here or by calling the donation hotline at 757-932-8976. \nHabitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg already operates the two most successful ReStores in the Commonwealth in Newport News and Williamsburg. The new Yorktown location will build on that success. \nAll ReStore proceeds go toward Habitat’s mission of building homes\, communities and hope in the local community. It costs $125\,000 to construct one Habitat house. The homes are sold to families who have qualified to purchase them through the Habitat first-time Homebuyer Program.

SUMMARY:Live Life in 3D: Groundbreaking Ceremony of Two 3D Printed Homes in Newport News
DESCRIPTION:Following the successful completion of the first Habitat for Humanity 3D printed home in the nation – completed in 2021 in Williamsburg – Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg is at it again! \nThanks to partners Newport News Shipbuilding and BayPort Credit Union\, Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will break ground on TWO 3D printed homes in Newport News\, Virginia on Tuesday\, October 11\, 2022. \nYou’re invited to tune in LIVE here on Facebook to the ceremony. \nAlquist\, the same 3D printed home company that worked on the Williamsburg home in 2021\, will also help construct these two homes. \nThe homes are made possible also by Newport News Redevelopment & Housing Authority\, Ferguson and CVP (Custom Vinyl Products)\, who have provided in-kind services and products to the homes. \nABOUT OUR HOUSE PARTNERS \nThe groundbreaking marks the 20th and 21st Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg homes sponsored by global defense and technologies partner HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division. It marks the first time NNS has sponsored two homes at once and is also the first time the homes sponsored by NNS are being built using 3D printing technology. NNS President Jennifer Boykin\, the 20th president of the shipyard\, is fittingly the executive sponsor of the 20th home\, while Dave Bolcar\, vice president of engineering & design\, is the executive sponsor of the 21st home. \nOrganized as Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. Employees’ Credit Union in 1928 to serve the financial needs of shipyard employees and their families\, today BayPort Credit Union is rated a Superior 5-Star Credit Union by Bauer Financial and services individuals and businesses of the Virginia Peninsula\, Southside\, and surrounding coastal communities. With nearly 148\,000 credit union members and more than $2.2 billion in assets\, BayPort’s purpose and philosophy remain faithful to its motto of people helping people. BayPort is committed to developing long-term prosperity for communities by committing to members’ financial well-being.

SUMMARY:Donation Drive: Newport News ReStore
DESCRIPTION:Fall cleaning really is a thing and it just so happens there’s never been a better time to donate to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Newport News. \nThe store operated by Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg is holding donation drives on three upcoming Saturdays: Sept. 24\, Oct. 1 and Oct 8 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. A truck will be parked in front of the store at 371 Chatham Drive to make dropping off your gently used items convenient. If you can’t make it on one of these Saturdays\, the ReStore accepts donations Monday-Saturday at the loading dock behind the store. \nRemember\, you can also schedule a FREE donation pickup here or by calling 757-932-8976\, Option 1. \nBonus: You get a 10% off coupon to shop at the ReStore\, where prices of new and gently used furniture\, appliances\, home accessories\, building materials and more are usually 30-90% off retail. \nDouble bonus: By donating\, you’re making a difference in the lack of local affordable housing\, a crisis that continues to worsen. The local Habitat affiliate received over 250 applications this year from families seeking to qualify for its first-time Homebuyer Program. That’s nearly double the amount from last year. \n“The demand exceeds the supply\,” said Janet V. Green\, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg. “Everyone deserves a decent\, safe place to live.” \nHabitat homes are sold to qualifying families who pay back a no-interest mortgage so that more homes can be built in the local community. \nThe local Habitat can build more homes with increased funding\, and the ReStores in Newport News and Williamsburg play a significant role in that. All proceeds from the ReStores go toward construction of local Habitat houses\, which cost $125\,000 to build. The inventory for the ReStore is almost all from donations. \n“By decluttering your home this fall and making room for the holidays\, you are supporting Habitat’s mission to build homes\, communities and hope\,” Green said. \nSee the full list of what to donate here.

SUMMARY:Braddy Family Groundbreaking
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us VIRTUALLY for the groundbreaking of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg’s home construction project for the Braddy family. \nTune in here on Facebook Tuesday\, September 27\, 2022 at 10 a.m. for a live stream from the event. \nThe home will be located in Newport News and is being built in partnership with the Braddy family and thanks to the sponsorship of the Annie Belle Reavis Tuccori Foundation. \nThe Annie Belle Reavis Tuccori Foundation honors the memory of a beloved Hampton Roads native\, and supporting the causes that mattered to her most. \nAnnie Belle Reavis Tuccori was born in Norfolk and named after her grandmother. She lived most of her life in Newport News and Hampton. She was a 1942 graduate of Newport News High School where she enjoyed acting in plays. On the weekends\, she would go with her father to the dances hosted at the country club (now The Woodlands Golf Course). Later in life\, Annie was employed by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company where she worked for 24 years. She was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church where she said the Lord enriched her life with every lesson there. \nShe believed in Newport News. She witnessed all of the highs and lows that have taken place over the last several decades – the victories\, the abundance\, the strife\, the storms\, the growth. She recognized the tremendous potential of her city\, and saw all of the people and organizations working tirelessly to make that potential a reality. Annie lived a life of prudence\, having grown up through the Great Depression and upon her death chose to provide the community she loved with a generous gift to foster the continued change that made this city so special to her. \nThe event will be held rain or shine and last no more than 30 minutes.
